Calvin College students "clean up" at MapleCreek

MapleCreek welcomed a service team of 11 first-year students from Calvin College on Thursday, Sept. 1. The group arrived at 11:30 a.m., were welcomed, ate lunch, and visited the county's historic Maple Grove Cemetery, the former poor farm burial ground that sits on the senior living campus. Then the freshmen split up into smaller groups and went to work walking the grounds and picking up trash, or helping Terraces resident Joey Fridsma fold flyers for a mailing.

In one of the work groups at MapleCreek were (left to right) Stephanie Anderson, Shane Brandsen, David Van Drunen and Jonathan Dehoog. These students were among more than 1,000 incoming freshmen who participated in Calvin College's 19th Annual StreetFest across the Grand Rapids area. The theme for Streetfest 2011 was "Courageous Awakening: Opening Hearts and Minds to the City."

The community service program has become a wonderful tradition for the school, emphasizing to the students the importance of having a servant's heart. It was a privilege to welcome them back this year.

Our thanks go out to the Calvin College StreetFest organizers, and to the Calvin College students who happily worked on mundane tasks, including spending time in the sun to make our senior living campus more beautiful. Have a great first year at Calvin!
