Chris Spencer photos on display at MSU

Chris Spencer, who has worked in dining services and at the reception desk at The Terraces at MapleCreek, had three of his photos selected by his Michigan State University professor for an exhibit. The 40 images were by students who took MSU’s first online photography course during the MSU Study Abroad Program last summer.

His parents, Scott and Becky, his brother Doug, his foster brother Zach, and more family and friends attended the exhibit and a reception for the photography students on Monday, Jan. 17, 2011, in the Kresge Art Center at MSU. Scott and Doug both work for MapleCreek.

“His professor was very complimentary,” said Scott Spencer, MapleCreek’s manager of Campus Services. “I was very impressed with the quality of work from all of the students.”

Chris is pursuing a double major of Spanish and Public Health. He enjoys photography as a hobby and was the first one to enroll in the online photography course. It was offered to study abroad students to enhance their experience of exploring new places and cultures.

After one week at home following the end of spring semester, Chris left for Santander on the northern coast of Spain. During his nine weeks there, Chris took three classes: “Reading Hispanic Literature,” “Topics in Hispanic Culture” and “Topics in Spanish Language.” And to top it off, Spain won the World Cup soccer championship in South Africa. It was an exciting time.

The professor considered all students who took his online photography course to be exhibitors, whether or not they are among the 25 who had at least one photo in a large enough format to be shown there. “The show is drawn from the work that was done not only in making the photographs, but in commenting on each others' works and helping each other become better photographers,” he said. “The exhibit honors all participants in the course.”
