The turnout was good for the first LSSM used goods donation drive. People stopped by Faith Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 13-14, 2010, and dropped off their contributions or asked if we could come get their used furniture. Doug Lachniet had his trailer hitched to his car, and was able to accommodate those requests. The drive collected furniture, including tables, chairs, lamps, beds, and dressers. There were large appliances, window air conditioners, electronic items including many TVs, plus kitchen appliances, pots and pans, dishes, bedding, clothing, toys, a treadmill, an electric fishing trolling motor, a space heater, several sewing machines and much more.
But the biggest surprise was the gift of 825 brand new heat-sensitive t-shirts. The photo-chromic images on the shirts change when the wearer’s body gets warm. John Reeves, the donor from St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids, said the shirts had been sitting in his garage and he had been wondering where he could donate them. The former B-24 bomber pilot also regaled us with tales of some of his flying experiences in the Pacific Theater during World War Two. He posed for a photo next to the cartons of t-shirts, holding up a shirt with a drawing of a dollar bill and the words Shrinking Dollar. “When it warms up, it changes to a picture of a quarter,” Mr. Reeves said with a chuckle.
Our thanks to Faith Lutheran Church for hosting the donation drive in their annex building, and for providing some volunteers.
