Foster teen wins art contest

Derrick, 16, who is in foster care through Lutheran Social Services, won first place in an art competition for foster youth. The contest was sponsored by Bethany Christian Services and was held at the Urban Institute of Contemporary Arts in Grand Rapids. Foster children were paired with local artists to create works on “My Story Through Art.” Visitors to the exhibit voted for their favorite work of art. Derrick will receive a digital camera and a tour of Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids. Derrick’s foster father is Cole Williams, 31, whose story was told in a Grand Rapids Press article on Father’s Day.
